TMJ DISORDER

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are the joints on each side of your face that connect the lower jaw to the rest of the skull. When this joint becomes irritated it can be very painful and cause problems with talking, chewing, or moving of the jaw. Sometimes the joint becomes injured from a single traumatic event such as a car accident or sports injury. Impacts to the front of the jaw, side of the jaw, or the upper neck can all lead to TMJ disorder.

TMJ disorder can also be caused by unnaturally sustained postures with the jaw, such as holding the mouth open for long periods at the dentist’s office while a procedure is performed. Regardless of the exact mechanism of injury, the pain and dysfunction are the same. Left untreated, this condition leads to a build up of scar tissue around the joint, increasing pain and dysfunction, and eventually arthritis of the joint.
